+With the help of numerous users a workaround for this crash might have finally been found! Thanks to Zachphi & Kryptic for finding a setting in DxWrapper that might have finally solved this long standing issue. Apparently setting the option "Dinputto8 = 1". Unfortunately this breaks joystick support, but it allows unpatched versions of the game to work.
